Good Morning Acorns,

We hope you have enjoyed learning about the Bottlenose dolphin. It is so exciting to learn new and interesting facts about animals.

In Literacy, we would like you to reflect on your fact book from yesterday. If you have not finished your book, please continue until it is complete. Once your book is complete, we would like you to think about non-fiction and fiction books. What is the difference between fiction and non-fiction books? The book you have made is a non-fiction book. It gives us information about Bottlenose dolphins, real dolphins that live in the sea.

Look at the ‘Is it Fiction or Non-Fiction?’ PowerPoint with your grown-up. On each page there is an example of a book. Can you identify which book is a fiction book and which is a non-fiction book? Give a thumbs up if you think it is fiction and a thumbs down if you think it is a non-fiction book.  Can you explain why you think this?  Look carefully at the illustrations on each front cover.

Afterwards, share a non-fiction book with your grown-up and discuss. Can you recognise the keywords by sight? What is the book telling you about? We have a book about wolves that you might like to read with your grown-up. This is the link you will need: https://www.starfall.com/h/ir-fnf/wolves/?sn=ir-fnf--im-reading You may have a favourite book at home that you would prefer to read.

In Maths, we will be adding pairs of numbers to make 20. We will begin to use a number track to count on up to 20. Make a pegged number line to 20 using a washing line and pegs and number cards from 1-20. You can use number cards from previous activities. You will also need 20 small toys to count, such as cars, dinosaurs or lego blocks.

This is an example of the activity.  Count out 15 beads and say the number clearly. Fifteen. Now we are going to add three more beads. How many will there be then? Hold up three fingers. This is how many we will add. Get three more beads. Then move them across one at a time to join the others as you count on sixteen, seventeen, eighteen. As you do this, fold down one finger for each bead you move and join in with your count. Write in your home learning book: 15 + 3 = 18.

Now examine 16 beads. If we add two beads to this group, how many will we have then? Hold up two fingers. This is what we will add. Say sixteen as point to the 16 beads then slide two more beads across to join them, one by one. Fold down a finger with each bead and whisper how many beads there are now. Record the addition in your home learning book.

Repeat with other additions. Finally, use the washing line instead. Find 14 and add 4 by counting on. Children show four fingers and count on, folding down one finger for each number as they count.

We have learning about dolphins. Watch this video about Bottlenose dolphins. This is the link you will need: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjMn_dVCJyA What have you found fascinating about the Bottlenose dolphin? Can you draw the Bottlenose dolphin on Purple Mash? Think about what might be in the sea around them, e.g. fish. See if you can paint an under the sea picture.

We have been learning about different types of books. Please share a fiction book called ‘The No-Tail Cat’ with your grown-up. This is the link you will need: https://www.starfall.com/h/ir-fnf/?sn=im-reading&mg=g Can you explain what this story is about? Reflect on how the cat felt in the story. Think about how we can hurt other people’s feelings with unkind words. Now think about ‘kind words’ that you might say to somebody else. When we say kind words to people it makes others feel happy. Choose a friend or family member to focus on. Think of 5 compliments that you could say to them to make them feel happy. For example, you might say to your mum, I think you are beautiful.

We have attached some simple keywords for you to practise reading at home. It is good to practise your keyword recognition daily. How many words can you read in 1 minute?

We hope you have a wonderful day. Remember to say thank you to your grown-up for helping you at home with your learning.
