Good Morning Acorns,

Thank you for your amazing paintings, it has been lovely to see the different parts of the story. Today we have some new activities for you to complete at home.

In Literacy, we will be using our phonics to help read new words. Please share How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers with your grown-up again. This is the link you will need: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTQ8T9lnck8

At the end of the story, look at the boy with his star. We are now going to focus on the word ‘star’. The word ‘star’ has 3 sounds. The letters ‘a’ and ‘r’ together make 1 new sound ‘ar’. For example, park. Please share the PowerPoint attached with your grown-up. Practise blending the letter sounds together to read each word.

Can you choose one word and write a sentence containing that word? Please ask your grown-up to model writing a sentence. For example, I went to the park. Write your sentence in your home learning book. Remember to use a capital letter at the beginning of your sentence, finger spaces and a full stop at the end of your sentence.

Now we are going to get active! Are you ready? Stand up and make sure you have plenty of space around you. We are going to practise counting today. Look at the hundred square with your grown-up. Count to 100, doing different actions for each row of the hundred square. For example, 1-10 jumping on the spot, 11-20 clapping your hands, 21-30 bending knees, 31-40 doing star jumps etc. See if you can count all the way up to 100!

On Friday 8th May, it is the 75th Anniversary of VE Day. Please share the PowerPoint attached about VE Day with your grown-up and discuss. Talk about how you think people felt when the war was finally over, e.g. happy, elated, excited, relieved, joyful etc. On VE Day, many people had street parties to celebrate. When there is a party, sometimes people put up bunting. Can you design your own bunting to display around your home to celebrate the 75th Anniversary? You can use paper and colouring pencils or any other resources you have at home. How will you decorate your bunting? If you prefer, why not design your own party hat on Purplemash? Which colours will you use?

Your next activity is to create your own Union Jack on Purplemash. Make sure you use the correct colours for your flag. You can refer back to the VE Day PowerPoint to look closely at the flag or ask your grown-up to show you an example of the Union flag on the computer.  We will look forward to seeing your creations!

It is a Bank Holiday tomorrow so we hope you have a wonderful time with your family. The blog will resume on Monday 11th May 2020.
