SCIENCE To find out about people who have developed useful new materials by learning about John McAdam.

Key/New Words:

Invent, macadamisation, macadam road, patent, Parliament, compensated, royalties, knighthood, tar, tarmacadam, tarmac.

Prior Learning:

Children will have learned about the uses of other everyday materials.

John McAdam: Read through the information on the Lesson Presentation.

Macadamisation: Explain the process of macadamisation and emphasise that this was a significant change in road building. Until then rural roads were often muddy, slippery and dangerous and urban roads were cobbled making them bumpy and uncomfortable to travel over. Are children able to tell you name of the process John McAdam invented?

John McAdam: Read through the information explaining the meaning of words patent, Parliament, compensated and royalties.

Impact Today: Use the Lesson Presentation to explain how macadam roads were developed and how the use of tar was added to stabilise them. These roads then became known as tarmacadam roads and then tarmac. Children discuss where they think tarmac is used today. Are children able to explain how his invention has impacted on life today?

Children complete the differentiated Fact File Activity Sheets.

Children use the John McAdam Word Mat to help them complete their fact file.

Learn about the work of a range of artists in the context of LS Lowry.

Key/New Words:

Matchstick figures.

Print the Lowry City Matchstick Figures Sheet.

If you choose, play Matchstick Men and Matchstick Cats and Dogs by Brian and Michael (1978).

Who is L.S. Lowry? Briefly revisit previous learning about the artist and his work.

Matchstick Figures: As a class, children discuss individual details from ‘Coming to the Mill’ and then identify the actions of various matchstick figures by their poses.

Who is That Man? Look at the figure and ask the questions to prompt discussion.

Drawing Matchstick Figures

Demonstrate choosing from the available media to draw a range of stick figures

• Model imagining what your matchstick figures are doing and using their poses to convey action • These figures will populate the Lowry City Collage- show how to draw them at an appropriate size! Show the ‘What a Good One Looks Like’ Slide or the Lowry City Matchstick Figures Sheet to illustrate the end result.
