Good Morning Acorns,

Thank you for your special fish on Purple Mash, they are fantastic. You’re working very hard at home.

To begin, we have a wonderful video about Whale sharks for you to share with your grown-up. This is the link you will need: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jApMS38YR6w Discuss with your grown-up any new facts you have learnt. Afterwards, please share the Facts about Sharks PowerPoint again with your grown-up. We have included a few more sharks, including the fascinating Goblin shark!

In Literacy, we will be thinking about comprehension. We would like you to practise your reading and answer some questions about the text you have read. You will find attached a sheet called ‘Comprehension Questions’.  This is based upon the Facts about Sharks PowerPoint. Look at each question and use your phonics to help read the sentences. Decide if the statement is true or false based on what you have read about each shark. In your home learning book, write the question number, then write ‘true’ or ‘false’ next to the number. Do this for each question. Remember to form each letter carefully.

Today we would like you to practise reading red words. Remember these are tricky words. It is good to regularly practise reading these words. Don’t worry if you find them tricky, it just means you need a little more practise. We can do it Acorns! Just keep practising. You do not need to do the whole PowerPoint. Please spend 10mins approximately on these words and then you can always revisit the red words later in the day. Little and often is best.

In Maths, we will be learning to solve simple subtractions by counting back.  Look at a number track with your grown-up. Practise counting up to 20 and back to 1. There is a number track attached for you to use.

Now ask your grown-up to place eight 1p coins into a purse. Choose a teddy or soft toy to use for this activity. The teddy has some money to spend! Shake the purse so you can hear the money rattling. Count how many pennies your teddy has in the purse. Establish that there are eight pennies, or 8p.

Take out 2p and give it to your grown-up. How much does your teddy have left? Hold up eight fingers and count back two. Ask your grown-up to model carefully, explaining counting back can help you to work out subtractions. Also ask your grown-up to model finding 8 on the number track and counting back 2 to the number 6. We can write this as a number sentence. Ask your grown-up to write on a piece of paper: 8 − 2 = naming each part and emphasising the subtraction sign: This means subtract; we sometimes call this take away. It means, ʻWhat is two less than eight?'  Can you write this subtraction number sentence in your home learning book?

Tip out the pennies to check that there are six left in the purse. Now add three 1p coins to the purse. Tip all the coins out and count together to establish that there is now 9p. Replace the coins in the purse. This time, give 3p to your grown-up. How much has teddy got left in the purse? Use your fingers to help you work it out. Start with nine fingers and fold down three saying, eight, seven, six. Establish you have six fingers left standing. Write in your home learning book, 9 – 3 = 6. Continue task with other subtractions. Make sure you write each subtraction number sentence in your home learning book.

In RE, we have been reflecting on Jesus’ rule to love one another and forgive one another. Recently, we have been thinking about how we feel when we forgive others. We can express a range of feelings, such as happiness or sadness. It is important to share your feelings with others. Please look at the Feelings PowerPoint with your grown-up and discuss.

It is time to get creative! We would like you to create an octopus collage. You will need to draw a large octopus or your grown-up can help draw an outline of an octopus. There is a template attached if you would like to use this. Then cut pieces of paper, card, tissue paper, sugar paper to create your collage. You may have other resources at home that you would prefer to use.  We hope you have fun!

Let’s finish with a story. Please listen to Rainbow Fish to the Rescue! by Marcus Pfister. This is the link you will need: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gja_mMXU4ao Discuss what happens in the story with your grown-up. We hope you enjoy the story.

Remember to say a big thank you to your grown-up for helping you at home with your learning.

We hope you have a wonderful day.
