Good Morning Acorns,

We hope you had a lovely weekend and you’re ready for a new week of learning. Thank you for your wonderful bicycle paintings on Purple Mash.

We would like you to now practise blending letter sounds together to read simple words. We have a fun phonic game for you to share with your grown-up. This is the link you will need: https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/3/buried-treasure

We will be continuing with our sea topic. We have been learning about sea creatures. Today we will be focussing on a particular sea creature called a 'shark'. Share the shark video with your grown-up. This is the link you will need: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hs2kbXUB6Q0 Discuss what sort of animal this is: A shark is not a mammal like a dolphin, seal or whale. A shark is a fish, because it breathes in water and lays eggs and its babies hatch in water. It cannot live on land.

Choose one type of shark and draw a picture of this shark. Write the name of the shark at the top of the page. Then see if you can label your picture, e.g. fin, teeth etc. Remember to form your letters carefully.

In Maths, we will be learning to recognise coins 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p and £1 and begin to order them according to their value. Look at the coins in the PowerPoint provided. Show both sides of each coin, discussing the coins in turn. Describe each one. (Itʼs silver, itʼs small and round, it says ʻfive penceʼ on the tails side…, etc.) Recent versions of some coins do not have a numeral on the tails side.

Look at a real 1p coin and see if you can describe the coin, e.g. it is brown/copper, it says one penny. Can you buy anything in a shop for 1p? Would you rather have a 1p or a £1? Why?Examine a real £1 and describe the coin comparing it to a 1p coin, e.g. the £1 coin is heavier and thicker, it is gold coloured, etc. Discuss what you can buy for £1. Look at other real coins and discussing them and comparing them to previous coins.

See if you can put the coins in order of value. We will order the coins from the one worth the most (you can buy the most with it) to the one worth the least.Discuss how two 5p coins is the same as 10p. Can you make any other coins with two coins, e.g. 2p is two 1p coins; 20p is two 10p coins, etc. You may find this concept tricky but the most important thing is to recognise and name the coins and begin to know their order of value.

It is time now for some singing with a sea theme!  Please listen to the song ‘A Sailor went to Sea Sea Sea’. This is the link you will need: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFxAiWkSePk What did the Sailor see? Think about the jellyfish you saw in the video. Can you design your own jellyfish? Please look at the Jellyfish Craft PowerPoint to help give you ideas about how to design your own jellyfish. Depending on the resources you have at home, you can use paper, card, tissue paper etc. We have attached a jellyfish template if you would like to use this.

We would like you to enjoy a fun game called 'I Spy'. It has a sea creature theme! Please look at the sheet attached. Can you find all the different sea creatures? In your home learning book, make a tally to record how many sea creatures you find.  Your grown-up may want to talk to you about how to record information by using tally marks.

Now it is the afternoon, it is a good way to end the day with a story. See if you can find the spy in today's story. You might even see a shark! The story is called Commotion in the Ocean by Giles Andreae. This is the link you will need: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pRhgZ8Jffs We hope you enjoy the story with your grown-up.

Keep working hard Acorns, we are extremely proud of you!
