English – Tadpole’s Promise Contractions

On Friday you learned how to use an apostrophe to join two words together. E.g. ‘can not’ becomes can’t. We took out the letters ‘n’ and ‘o’ from the word ‘not,’ put in the apostrophe to take their place and pushed the letters together, to make the shorter word can’t. We call this a contraction. There are many contractions in our story Tadpole’s Promise. I want you to find them. Use the PowerPoint story. Write down the word with the apostrophe in your book and next to it write the two words that it is made up from.

e.g.  you’ll  =  you will

See how many you can find!

Count up in 2s from 0 to 60. Now count backwards from 60 – 0. Do you remember all the coins we use in the UK? Name them.

Now watch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-d5n3ltpwg&feature=emb_rel_pause

Two 1p coins are the same as one 2p coin

1p + 1p = 2p

five 1p coins are the same as one 5p coin

1p + 1p + 1p + 1p + 1p = 5p

Which coin is the same as ten 1p coins? That’s right one 10p coin!

Cut out the coins from the coin sheet OR use real coins and see if you can make 11p using ONLY two coins. How did you make it? That’s right one 10p coin and one 1p coin.

10p + 1p = 11p

Now complete the worksheet. Do as much as you can in the time you have.

*Keep your coins, you will need them again!
