I can bounce.

I can jump from two feet to two feet.

I can jump safely off and on to the equipment.

I can travel in different directions.

Warm-Up: Choose one of the Warm-Up Cards that focuses on aerobic exercise to warm the children up ready for exercise. Ask ‘Why do we need to warm our bodies up before we exercise?’

Skill: Bouncing: Give tips on bouncing using the Lesson Presentation. Teaching Points: Low jumps from two feet to two feet. Bend the ankles, knees and hips and use arms at their sides for propulsion. Children bounce like bunnies on the spot and in different directions. Ask ‘Can you bounce forwards, backwards and sideways?’ Pick out good examples to demonstrate then they try again.

Skill: Jumping: Ask ‘How high can you bounce?’ Give tips for jumping safely using Lesson Presentation video clip. Teaching Points: Bend ankles, knees and hips, swing arms to get higher. Jump from two feet to two feet landing on the balls of the feet. Children practise jumping in different directions. Pick out good examples to demonstrate then they try again.

Setting out the Apparatus: Remind the children how to lift and set out the equipment safely. Refer to the Lesson Presentation and Adult Guidance. Organise children to work in groups and set out the equipment using the Gymnastic Apparatus Suggested Area Plan if required. Ask ‘Can you remember how to set out the apparatus safely?’

Skill: Jumping Safely onto Equipment: Give tips for bunny hopping over and onto the equipment. Teaching Points: Make sure the area you are jumping into is clear before you jump. Stand at the side of the bench. Hold it with both hands. Bend your ankles, knees and hips and jump your feet up onto the bench in a tucked position. Land on the balls of your feet. Refer to Lesson Presentation video clip. Ask ‘Have you got a clear space to jump onto?’ Pick out good examples to demonstrate then try again.

Skill: Jumping Safely off Equipment: Give tips for jumping safely down from equipment. Teaching Points: Make sure the area you are jumping into is clear. Only jump from low equipment. Stand with feet hip distance apart. Bend your ankles knees and hips and swing your arms for propulsion. Jump from two feet to two feet and land on the balls of your feet. Refer to Lesson Presentation video clip. Ask ‘Have you got a clear space to jump into?’ Pick out good examples to demonstrate then they try again.

Jumpity Jump: Children bounce and jump in different directions around, along, off and onto the equipment. Ask ‘Are you jumping safely?’ ‘Have you got a clear space to jump into/onto?’ Pick out good examples to demonstrate then try again. Encourage children to enter and leave the equipment at different angles instead of queuing at one end. Ask ‘Can you bounce along the equipment and then jump down from it?’ ‘Can you jump onto the equipment and then bounce along it?’
